Grade 5 DepEd Curriculum: Full Budget of Work & MATATAG Alignment

This is the same source material Learning Hall's own Grade 5 quests are built from — every subject DepEd's MATATAG curriculum covers this year, broken down term by term. It's here for two reasons: so a parent can see exactly what "DepEd-aligned" means for Grade 5 in concrete terms, and so Learning Hall itself stays honest about what it's actually teaching against.

Special Science (SSES) Enrichment

English, Mathematics, and Science each carry an additional layer of Special Science Elementary School (SSES) enrichment at this grade level, marked below — an extra applied-reasoning task layered on top of the standard MATATAG competencies, not a separate curriculum. Every other subject follows the standard DepEd competencies as written.

English

SSES Enrichment

Grade 5 English — Budget of Work

Term 1 (context: national holidays)

Receptive — literary text: identifying story grammar elements (character, setting, plot, conflict, theme); sequencing 7 or more textually stated and implied events; distinguishing a sequential plot from other plot structures; recognizing sound devices (alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme) and figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification); inferring characters' feelings, traits, and motives from their actions and dialogue; making and confirming predictions before, during, and after reading; determining the main idea and supporting details; producing a summary of a text. Receptive — informational text: analyzing text structures such as outlining and the inverted pyramid; distinguishing explanation texts from news reports by purpose and structure; identifying the author's purpose (to inform, persuade, or entertain); differentiating fact from opinion. Productive — vocabulary & grammar: distinguishing denotative from connotative word meaning using analogy as a context clue; identifying and using verb-forming suffixes (-ize, -ify, -en); using a dictionary to check meaning, pronunciation, and part of speech; adopting a formal tone suited to audience and purpose; subject-verb agreement with collective, concrete, and abstract nouns; demonstrative and relative pronouns; distinguishing helping, linking, and transitive verbs; progressive verb tenses (past/present/future progressive); ordering adjectives in a series; adverbs of manner and time; noun complements; composing compound-complex sentences. Productive — composing: writing narrative, explanation, and news-report text types; writing friendly letters with correct parts; using non-verbal cues (gesture, facial expression, tone of voice) in oral communication; accomplishing personal and school forms (enrollment forms, permission slips). Viewing: analyzing visual layout elements (headlines, captions, images) in print/digital texts; interpreting tone and mood conveyed by visuals; recognizing stereotypes related to age, gender, and socio-economic status in media; identifying audio elements (music, sound effects) in multimedia presentations.

Special Science enrichment: Push inference and evaluation further than identification — require Damien to defend a character-motive inference or a fact-vs-opinion judgment with a direct quote from the text, and to critique a real news report's structure and possible bias rather than just label its parts.

Term 2 (context: Ramadan & Chinese New Year)

Builds on Term 1 and adds — receptive: recognizing flashback as a plot/text-organization pattern; identifying metaphor, personification, and hyperbole in literary texts; using appositives as a context clue for word meaning; using a glossary to find a word's meaning within a specific text. Productive — vocabulary & grammar: identifying and using adverb-forming suffixes (-ly, -ward, -wise); possessive and compound nouns; relative pronouns (who, which, that) in complex sentences; adverbs of place, frequency, and intensity; noun and pronoun complements. Productive — composing: accurately filling out bank and government forms (e.g. deposit slip, application form) with correct personal information. Viewing: recognizing directionality (left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and culturally specific reading paths) in visual texts; identifying video-specific multimedia elements (transitions, captions, pacing).

Special Science enrichment: Have Damien explain how a flashback changes a reader's understanding of cause-and-effect in a story, and compare the effect of a metaphor versus a hyperbole used for the same idea — an analytical, not just identification, task.

Term 3 (context: Indigenous Peoples & regional celebrations)

Builds on Terms 1-2 and adds — receptive: identifying personification and hyperbole in texts describing culture and tradition; using an encyclopedia (print or digital) to research a topic. Productive — vocabulary & grammar: correctly using reflexive pronouns (myself, himself, themselves); identifying and using degrees of comparison (positive, comparative, superlative) for regular and irregular adverbs; recognizing noun, pronoun, and adjective complements in sentences. Productive — composing: planning and creating an original short multimedia text (e.g. a slideshow or short video) that presents researched information about an Indigenous group or a regional celebration.

Special Science enrichment: Require the multimedia research project to draw on and cross-check at least two sources, include Damien's own analytical commentary rather than retold facts, and justify his vocabulary and tone choices for the intended audience.

Science

SSES Enrichment

Grade 5 Science — Budget of Work

Term 1

  • Wk1-2: Matter has mass (a quantity that can be measured) and takes up space (volume); the three states of matter — solid, liquid, gas — classified by whether shape and volume are fixed or not fixed; sorting familiar classroom/household materials into the correct state
  • Wk2-4: Comparing properties of solids, liquids, and gases (definite vs. indefinite shape/volume); measuring the volume of liquids using a graduated container (mL, L); reading a thermometer in °C; observing how heating/cooling causes a change of state (melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation) and naming melting point/boiling point
  • Wk5-7: The steps of a simple scientific investigation — stating the problem/question, listing materials, describing the procedure, recording findings and a conclusion; using appropriate units for mass (mg, g, kg) and temperature (°C); guided practice planning a simple investigation (e.g. "Do gases have mass?", "Does water temperature affect how fast sugar dissolves?")
  • Wk8-10: Classifying living things into plants, animals, and microorganisms based on observable characteristics; identifying specialized plant structures for storage, protection, or support (rhizomes, tubers, thorns, bulbs, aerial roots, tendrils); explaining how these structures help a plant survive unfavorable conditions such as drought, strong wind, or being eaten

Special Science enrichment: Have Damien design his own testable question (not just follow a given one) for the Wk5-7 investigation unit — e.g. comparing evaporation rate across two liquids — and explicitly name what he is keeping the same (control) vs. changing (variable) before running it.

Term 2

  • Wk11-13: Animal body systems built as labeled models/diagrams — digestive (mouth, esophagus/gullet, stomach, small and large intestine) tracing the path food takes; respiratory (nose, trachea/windpipe, lungs) tracing the path air takes; reproductive system introduced only at an age-appropriate, functional level (its role in growth and development, not detailed anatomy) — intentional child-safety simplification, not a curriculum gap: DepEd's official Grade 5 competency asks for labeled diagrams naming ovaries, uterus, vagina, prostate, and testis, which this app deliberately omits; do not "correct" this toward the literal official wording without a product decision to do so
  • Wk14-16: Comparing live-bearing (viviparous) and egg-laying (oviparous) animals; animal adaptations for survival — mimicry, camouflage, protective coloration, structural adaptations (e.g. sharp claws, thick fur); comparing the life cycles of mammals, birds, and plants
  • Wk17: Contact forces (push/pull) and how applying one changes an object's speed or direction of motion; identifying contact forces in everyday activities
  • Wk18-19: Friction as a contact force — how surface texture (rough vs. smooth) affects it, heat produced by friction, ways to reduce it (lubricants, wheels, smoother surfaces) or increase it (treads, grip material); planning and carrying out an investigation that identifies and controls the variables affecting friction (e.g. surface type, weight, contact area)
  • Wk20-21: Gravity as a non-contact force pulling objects toward Earth; observing falling objects; how gravity shapes the motion of rolling, falling, and thrown objects

Special Science enrichment: For the Wk18-19 friction investigation, require a genuine fair test — Damien tests 3 or more surface materials, changes only one variable at a time, records numeric results (e.g. distance traveled, time), and graphs them, rather than just describing friction qualitatively.

Term 3

  • Wk22-23: Static electricity produced by friction (rubbing a comb, rubber rod, or balloon) and the attraction/repulsion this causes; building a simple series circuit (battery, wire, switch, bulb) that lights a bulb; sorting materials into conductors and insulators; building and testing the strength of a simple electromagnet (nail, coiled wire, battery)
  • Wk24-26: Major landforms (mountains, plains, plateaus, valleys) and bodies of water (rivers, lakes, seas, oceans) and how each influences the climate and livelihood of nearby communities; classifying rocks by texture, color, and grain size; how soil forms through weathering, and factors that speed up or slow down erosion
  • Wk27: The stages of the water cycle — evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection/runoff; building and labeling a physical or drawn model of the cycle
  • Wk28-30: Weather disturbances common in the Philippines (tropical cyclones/bagyo, monsoon rains); PAGASA Public Storm Warning Signal levels (Signal No. 1 to 5) and the wind conditions each represents; safety preparations to take before, during, and after a tropical cyclone
  • Wk31-32: The structure of the solar system — the Sun, the eight planets, and moons, and their relative scale; how Earth's rotation causes day and night and how its revolution relates to the year; how the changing positions of Earth, Moon, and Sun produce the phases of the Moon

Special Science enrichment: During Wk28-30, have Damien track an actual PAGASA weather bulletin for a real or recent tropical cyclone over several days and chart how the Signal Number and expected impact changed, rather than only memorizing the signal-number scale from a textbook table.
